Raja ‘meaning king’ is a symbol of independence, self-discipline, and confidence. Interestingly, ‘Raja Yoga’ is a practice of attaining autonomy and self-realization. From a historical perspective, ‘Raja Yoga’ is a dialogue written in the second chapter of ‘Shaiva’ yoga text and dates back to the 12th century CE or earlier.
Raja yoga is a holistic exercise of 8 steps, and it is also known as Ashtanga yoga for eight elements or limbs, which are:
Yama (Self-control)
Niyama (Discipline)
Asana (Physical exercises)
Pranayama (Breathing exercises)
Pratyahara (Freeing senses from external objects)
Dharana (Concentration)
Dhyana (Meditation)
Samadhi (Absorption)
